I love the game of monopoly. I’m good at it. I win much more than I lose. My son won’t play with me anymore. He says I cheat (I do not, for the record.)
My husband has never won against me. In fact, it became a point of tension a few years back. He is a former athlete and competitive. Losing regularly at anything is hard for him. So I finally said “Do you want me to tell you why you keep losing to me?”
I’m going to tell you the reason I gave him and I’m going to do that because the way he plays monopoly is the way most people run their marketing. So if marketing often feels like a can’t-win game where other people have secrets to winning you weren’t given, this is really going to help you.
What I explained to my husband is that he buys up every property he lands on until he runs out of money. He holds a lot of single properties which keeps him from amassing the money he’d need to get a monopoly and eventually build houses, which is where the real success comes from.
You are probably thinking “That is interesting, Patty, but I really don’t see what that has to do with my marketing.” Let me explain.
Most people grab up whatever marketing approach they hear is working for others. Eventually, they have 5, 6 or even 10 marketing strategies going at once which means they are spread too thin. In the game of Marketing, time (not fake monopoly money) is what fuels success.
Marketing success comes when you focus your time and attention on a few select marketing strategies that can bear fruit and ignore the rest. It doesn’t matter if everyone in your industry is winning with Instagram. If Instagram isn’t your ideal strategy you have to resist the urge to dabble, just like my husband has to resist the urge to buy Boardwalk when he only has $500 monopoly bucks left to his name.
Of course there is more to winning at Marketing than just simplifying and focusing on what works. Once you do that you must have a plan on what you are going to do over time and understand how to track whether what you are doing is working or not.
