When I was about 25 a friend of mine betrayed me. Worse than that, she actively set out to hurt me and damage my reputation. She worked very hard at it.
I’m not sure if it was what she said or the energy she put into it that hurt more.
At the time and for many years following I tried to figure out what I had done to bring this on. I’ve always been one to look inward first – determine what I could have done differently to create an alternate outcome.
There is value in owning our role in our lives. It helps us grow and improve.
But there is a point where it is damaging, especially when you end up making yourself responsible for someone else’s poor behavior. That’s what I had done.
I happened to run into this person a few months ago. Through a very short conversation, my old hurt bubbled up to the surface. I could not believe she could just stand there talking as if she had done nothing wrong.
Over the next few days, my anger grew and grew. From the deepest part of my soul, I prayed “Please free me from this pain!”
Just then a single word landed in my consciousness.
Forgive.
Forgive? How can I forgive? She consciously chose to hurt me and never apologized! There were so many problems that happened because of her.
Even as I ran through all the reasons I couldn’t forgive her, my soul showed me I had to forgive her. Until I did, I wouldn’t be free.
My unforgiveness anchored me to the past. I had to let go. I knew I needed help.
I booked a healing session with my Shamanic Practitioner Deana. Through that process, I could feel the threads of unforgiveness unwind. The freedom was palpable.
The next day something totally unrelated that I had been struggling with resolved itself. The day after that one of my children had a breakthrough on something that I had worried about. Like a string of dominos, things that had been in an energetic holding pattern corrected and improved.
It was wild!
Everything we are and do is connected. We loosen a knot in one area and other knots come undone.
I have a question for you.
What do you need to forgive?
After my healing session, I realized I hadn’t just needed to forgive this person. I needed to forgive myself. Forgive myself for trying so hard and wasting so much energy to make it right. Forgive myself for trusting someone and investing so much love in a person who didn’t deserve it. Forgive myself for believing I wasn’t enough.
Forgiveness gifts freedom.
If you are craving more freedom in your life, see if you can find a tiny knot of unforgiveness within you. Undo that knot and you will be amazed at what unfolds!
