For most of my entrepreneurial career, this time of year would send me into a panic. I would think about all the goals I had set for the year that I had yet to achieve. I’d be scrambling trying to think of ways to make money during the holidays (which is pure lunacy IMHO.). And I’d shove the holidays to the back of my mind even though I TOTALLY LOVE THE HOLIDAY SEASON!!!
I repeated this cycle year after year.
And year after year I’d spend the first two weeks of January recovering from the insanity I had created in the last two months of the previous year.
Then one year I realized that running my business and my life reactively just wasn’t working for me. I needed time to plan. I needed time to relax. I needed time to have fun. And that was especially true for the end of the year.
That year I decided to mentally end my business year on November 30. It wasn’t that I was opposed to making money in the month of December, I just stopped making it my focus.
I used December for three purposes:
- To review and evaluate the current year. What worked, what didn’t. What did I love, what had started to wear me down. Who was I playing with that lifted me higher and who was dragging me down.
- To create space to set goals that felt meaningful and aligned with where I wanted to go and who I wanted to be.
- To enjoy the freakin holidays!!!!
