I LOVE being a Mom. I’m so very truly grateful I was able to be a stay at home Mom during the toddler years. I was SUPER MOMMY going on play dates, going to story time at the library, going to the playgrounds to swing, etc.. Everything was going really well, but I felt like something was missing. I was super consumed with the children.
It ALL changed the day my favorite gal pal, Oprah, shared pole dancing with me in 2004. As I watched, I was in shock that pole dancing was on Oprah. I mean, really?!!?! But later that night, as I was knitting, I thought to myself, this could’ve impacted my relationship with my body when I was younger. There was such a spirit of loving your body and celebrating it. I decided immediately – I have to learn to pole dance and I have to share it with others. I had never touched a pole in my life, but I was determined to learn and teach! Crazy, isn’t it? I still think it’s crazy!
It was a wonderful moment, to discover a new passion and to be so determined to touch the lives of other women, but I was SCARED!
My biggest challenge was whether to begin or not. Do you know how many reasons why I shouldn’t pursue my desire to pole dance and teach? Here’s a bit of the trash that was running through my head:
- I’m a Mom – I can’t be a pole dancer
- I can’t leave my children for three weeks to train to be a pole dance instructor.
- What will people think?
- I’m almost 40 years old.
- If someone asks me what I do, how do I tell them I’m a pole dancer?
- People are going to think I am/was a stripper.
- What will my children’s friends’ moms think of me? Will they let their children in my home?
- Will I be strong enough to pole dance?
- Will I be good enough to teach?
It was really rough to get through all this negative nonsense in my head – I mean really rough. It was so loud and true. I got through it by truly believing in the positive experience I can offer women, following my desire to learn pole dancing, and not caring about what others thought of me. I knew I was going to impact women’s lives in a very positive unique way.
I’m truly grateful I did not let my fear (including the trash running through my head) stop me from what I was called to do.
Since that powerful moment to choose to pursue this new passion, life has never been the same. I touched thousands of women’s lives in a very juicy, fun, sexy, powerful way. They walk with their head up high, proud to be a woman, with a whole lot of body confidence and love.
I am grateful.
