This morning I trotted over to the doctors office. I few symptoms told me I needed western medicine.
I lost my voice a few days ago so, being the control freak I am, I typed up a 10 day history of symptoms and rememdies taken.
The doctor (and the medical student shadowing the doctor) oohed and ahh’d over the document. They told me if all patients could communicate so clearly their job would be so much easier.
And you know what I did?
I grinned like a goofy kid.
Because I am a people pleaser. As much as I’ve worked on this part of myself I still light up when I get approval.
Here is what I’ve learned – we can’t change innate parts of ourselves. We just need to make sure they don’t rule our lives. If the doctor would have looked annoyed at my notes I probably would have laughed because I’ve done the work to not be triggered by perceived “rejection.”
When I don’t get approval I’m good. But when I get approval I roll around in that goodness. I can’t help myself.
I’ve used this same people-pleasing tendency to get good at Facebook ads, writing copy and lots of other marketing. When a potential client responds positively to something I’ve created, I am thrilled. I pay attention to that and I do more of that. It is smart business and its also *crack* for a people pleaser like me.
When no one responds to something I put out I don’t get insulted – I use it as information.
When a Facebook post is shown alot I know I’m doing something right and do more of it. When it isn’t, I don’t get mad at facebook, I try something new and watch for “approval.”
Depersonalizing the negative and enjoying the positive aspects of your wacky personality dysfunctions is how you succeed and enjoy the privilege of being YOU. You’ll never be able to stop enjoying what you enjoy. The key is to make your crazy ways your servant and not the master.

Now if you’ll excuse me I’m going to go spend a few minutes fantasizing about how all the doctors are gathered around my notes at the office talking about how awesome I am.
How can you enjoy your “crazy” more today?
