During the first few years of my business I was operating on three different social media platforms and trying to figure out how I could make time for a fourth. I was also speaking, networking, offering webinars online, blogging, guest blogging and emailing my list. In 2010 I started hosting meet ups and live events.
By 2012 I launched my first conference.
By 2013 I wanted to quit.
When I looked closely at why I wanted to quit it came down to one reason – I was exhausted and overwhelmed. (Wait, is that two reasons?)
I took a long hard look at where I was spending my time and realized most of it was creating very little results.
I made the tough decision to stop doing anything that didn’t actually create more success and happiness. Most of what I stopped doing was marketing. I let my twitter, youtube and Pinterest handles go cold. I cut back on my networking. I gave up on guest blogging altogether.
After that my business blossomed. I was having more fun because I was doing all the things I loved to do and because I was focused on only a few marketing channels I got much better at each of them.
By 2014 I was back in LOVE with my business.
If you feel frustrated and overwhelmed with marketing right now I encourage you to evaluate where you are spending your time and eliminate any marketing technique that isn’t creating tangible results in your business. Most likely much of what you are doing to market your business, you are doing simply because you think you are “supposed to” do it.
There is no one formula that works for any business. Your ideal marketing plan has to come from within you.
If you need help deciding what to keep and what to stop doing here are my criteria:
- Do I love doing it?
- Do I reach my ideal clients with it? (you can love Twitter but if your clients are there it doesn’t make much sense to count it as a marketing technique)
- Do I get results from it? (i.e. sales come from this marketing directly or indirectly)
If you are using a marketing technique right now and can’t answer “yes!” to all three than my recommendation is that you stop doing it. Focus on the marketing that is working. The coolest part in making this change is that the marketing you are doing will start to yield much better results. You’ll be focused and consistent and marketing will get much easier. And who doesn’t want that?
I know many entrepreneurs had a slow start to 2017. If you are one of them, don’t worry. Many of us were feeling it. Now is the time to kick your marketing into high gear! That is going to feel much more exciting and doable if you are focused on the marketing that gets you results!
