Would you love to grow your speaking platform but just aren’t sure how to get on more stages?
I get it. Four years ago, I desperately wanted to be speaking on stages around the country. I had a powerful
message I KNEW people needed to hear.
I wondered:
What did I need to do to get booked on stages so I could share my message with the world?!!!
Was there some secret formula to getting booked? Was it just plain luck?
I soon learned it was not luck and there was no secret formula. But there were a few things highly successful speakers were doing differently that created their success. They didn’t just engage these unique behaviors occasionally, they made them habits.
If you know you are meant to be on the stage sharing your message with the world, or just happen to already know Speaking is one of the most powerful marketing methods around, you’ll want to make the following 3 Habits of Highly Successful speakers your own:
Habit #1
Highly successful speakers have 100% consistent faith in their calling to be a speaker.
That sounds pretty obvious right? And you are probably thinking I don’t just have 100% faith, I have 1000% faith in my calling to be a speaker.
I know you believe that in your heart but if you are not speaking as much as you would like to be speaking you have not yet made your faith a habit.
Having helped many clients grow their speaking platform what I generally see (and what I experienced for myself early on) is that most speakers ride a roller coaster of faith in their calling to be a speaker.
See if this sounds familiar…
You give a talk and you feel fabulous! You are flying. You know exactly that this is where you are meant to be – on stage! You are going to make this a huge part of your business growth.
But a technology snafu in your business grabs your attention. Or you get caught up in on-boarding clients or selling products. A few weeks or months pass and you haven’t spoken on a stage.
You reach out to a few meeting planners but you can’t get anyone to even respond to your requests to speak.
Growing your speaking platform starts to feel HARD!
But then one day an invitation to speak rolls in. You nail it and people line up to speak with you afterwards. With just an hour on stage and a few follow up conversations you’ve already made a month’s worth of sales.
You remember how much you love speaking and what it does for your business so you recommit.
You reach out to ten meeting planners but you don’t hear back from a single one of them. Your heart drops. Are you really meant to do this? It feels so HARD!
STOP!
In order to be successful speaker you must stop allowing failure to be an option. Said another way… you must see success as your destiny.
This means when you get turned down by a meeting planner, or more likely ignored by a meeting planner, you don’t give up. You don’t make it MEAN something.
This requires a tremendous amount of faith and trust in your path.
Your first step to making this habit your own is to decide you are a speaker and release all other options as a possibility!
Once you’ve done that its time for
Habit #2
Highly Successful Speakers are actively engaging meeting planners and speaking opportunities every week
Highly successful speakers are doing outreach to meeting planners and responding to call for speaker every week. It is critical that you do this EVERY SINGLE WEEK without fail.
This means if you have technology issue pop up in your business you still do your outreach. If you get inundated with new client requests because of that awesome talk you gave last week… you still do your outreach. No matter what happens highly successful speakers prioritize outreach above all else.
To support you in doing this I encourage you to create a plan on who you will reach out to and when you will do it. A big question I get all the time is:
Where do I find all those meeting planners and opportunities to speak?!!!
I know it can feel overwhelming when you start out but I can assure you opportunities to speak are everywhere. To help make that planning a bit easier for you I have created this easy to use resource guide. Just click on the image to get access to this guide now:

Habit #3
Highly Successful Speakers Leverage Their Time On Stage
What does that even mean?
It means that when you are on stage be sure to make it easy for your audience to get in touch with you. Share your social media handles and/or website address.
Make reference to how an audience member can refer speaking engagements to you (if it’s appropriate for the type of speaking engagement you are giving).
And finally, show a lot of love for the meeting planner while you are on stage. Simply commenting on how great the event is and mentioning him or her by name goes a long way.
As someone who not only speaks, but also hosts conferences for 200 people I can tell you that when I feature a speaker and they show me the love they reserve a special place in my heart. Meeting planners talk and if they remember you, you will get booked again and again.
Now what are you waiting for? You have already decided YOU ARE A SPEAKER. Time to make a plan and go leverage the heck out of the next stage you find.
